It’s Beginning to Look a Little Bit Like Christmas

IMG_1601

Asher and I ventured out into the county yesterday afternoon to find the first full size Christmas tree we’ve had for ten years! My favorite trees are always the sparse ones that allow each ornament to be showcased, so I was thrilled to find this beauty at Misty Meadows Farm in Everson.  When we had smaller trees they were only adorned with my favored European blown glass ornaments. This year it was really fun to dig deeper into the box and pull out the ornaments that had not gotten the call to duty for a long time. It was bit of a walk down memory lane as it is tradition to give Asher a new ornament each year and so many of them reflect his various interests as he’s grown : )

Asher’s ornament collection started with one of my all time favorite story characters, Winnie-the-Pooh. We have an ornament featuring each of the characters from the Hundred Acre Wood.

Another of Asher’s first ornaments- this one was a gift from Grammy for Christmas 1996

This tiny tractor was a gift for Asher from Auntie Erin, Christmas 1997 - the year he became obsessed with anything with wheels

Eventually the obsession with wheeled vehicles was narrowed to trains…

and a few years ago moved on to planes.

This is the ornament I gave Asher this year!

My favorites ornaments are the blown glass ones from Europe which are becoming harder and harder to find. Most of them are now mass produced in China. Sadly, my favorite of all broke last year  but I was able to find a replacement online. It should be here by the end of the week!

The blown glass lady bug came to live with us the year Asher discovered the cute little bugs in the garden. Actually this is the second ornament like this that I purchased… the first one was thrown across the room to see if it could fly! It couldn’t .

I’ve had this blown glass soldier since the year I moved to Bellingham - 1991… it used to be  a set of three. He’s the last one left.

I love the Humpty Dumpty ornament that attaches to a light!

This one was a gift from my best friend, Erin… we help each other through the holidays : )

The peace ornament was added to the collection last year.

I started collecting  cardinal ornaments the year after I returned from Michigan, where cardinals are seen all winter long.

I’ve had the Santa ornament above and the toy soldier ornament below longer than any others… both are from Christmas 1988!

The ice skates were attached to a gift from Asher’s dad, Christmas 1991.

I love vintage ornaments and simply do not have enough of them. I have about a half dozen of these vintage glass balls surrounded in silver wire netting, each in a different color.

Another vintage ornament, it appears she used to have wings but I think she looks just fine as a little girl. The stamp on the bottom says “West Germany, Registered”

The felted sheep came home with me last week from Bellingham’s December art walk . I heart it!
